Open Source Disk Cloning & Imaging Softwares – Linux

The process of creating image file or copying content from one disk to another is called as disk cloning.  In windows we can easily clone using norton ghost, paragon backup & recovery tools, nero etc. lets look up few linux softwares which can make this task easy.

1) dd command

dd is an inbuild command within linux. lets have a look the syntax to use this command, lets use it first for cloning partitions.

[root@indianpirates ~]# dd if=/dev/sdb3 of=/dev/backup/sdc3

Where if = input file, of = output file,  You can also clone disk using below command.

[root@indianpirates ~]# dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sda1 bs=2M conv=noerror

To restore a file you can using the same command in reverse order exactly listed below
[root@indianpirates ~]# dd if=/dev/backup/sdc3 of=/dev/sdc bs=1M conv=noerror

2) Clonezilla

Greatest highlight for clonezilla is that it is FREE & Open source . other good features of clonezilla are disk cloning, disaster recovery, disk imaging etc. clonezilla comes in 2 versions

  • Live version – used for home or single pc
  • Server version – used in Data center or multi pc networks

3) Trinity Rescue Kit

As famously pronounced as TRK come in live linux disk good thing is that it is free and can be used to recover disk when needed, it can be run from windows also. Lets have a look at some of the features of TRK.

  • viruscan integrated with full working capabilities

  • Recovery of partitions
  • Ntfs support
  • Windows password reset
  • Etc

They are many tools which we can use, i try to just point out few so that you don’t go and search whole internet while you need most. you can use anyone of the the above when emergency and later on you can explore more powerful tools.
